MAD – mutually assured destruction is what supposedly kept the peace between the US and the USSR during the Cold War. Although they fought each other in Afghanistan, all over Africa, and elsewhere, it did work in the western world. But the mutual part is missing in the Middle East. Only Israel has nuclear weapons, and its conventional forces are far greater than all the Arab states combined. Plus almost all Arab and Muslim states are run by clients of the West. So Israel launches assaults and massacres at will. In the absence of any effort to disarm Israel, it is to be hoped that Iran will build a nuclear weapon. This would contribute to stability in the region. As to further mass expulsions of Palestinians (further to the mass ethnic cleansingsof 47/48 and 67), I think they are reasonably likely. Israel just needs the world to look the other way, for circumstances to be right.

How likely is it that Israel will decide to expel or exterminate the Palestinians and then rely on MAD to keep the Arabs from wiping it out? (In other words, how likely is it that Israel would become the Middle East’s North Korea?)
