I'm not sure the American flag hung on so many porches is necessarily or always the kind of jingoistic symbol that the loathsome Union Jack would be in the UK. It's often saying, about the house from which it hangs: "THIS is America. Get off my back, big government." It's a kind of flag of independence. The reverse, in fact, of a sign that the owner wants to be immersed in some nationalistic whole.

Don't tell me that you were on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight last Friday the 19th, because I was and it would have been a pity if our paths did not cross.

The preboarding interviews, by the way, are not only for non-citizens. Citizens whose passport states that they are born in Syria will have to endure extra, annoying -and useless- questions.

At any rate, you have managed to accurately distill the good, the bad and the ugly about America.

Great post and wonderful to hear that you had an uneventful and safe trip sans rubber gloves at the airport! Yes, I did notice similarities to Saudi Arabia too when I visited America, as you said Saudi is built upon the American model. I was very interested to read about Yousef Siddik and would love to hear more about what he says of the Qur'an. I have had suspicions for a long time that something similar to what he says is indeed the problem. Welcome back!
