Iraqi Fragments
Between the rivers where words begin
Strange architecture of flesh drawn by war
Babies born in the form
of bunches of grapes
And men who die tongueless
women die breastless
Not human any more.
Leaf storm of limbs
Hopping legs, the hand-to-stump somersault of arms in flight
Torsoes shimmying across the moistened land
not on feet, not on wheels
A child’s eye
kaleidoscope of dismembered memory
the desert glaring light.
